Its back to school time at least it is for me, so thats the main reason why this review it a bit late. Anyways, the book that is being reviewed today is called Deceived by Desire by one of my favorite authors, Marie Force from her Gilded Series. I have not done a review on the first book of the series, Duchess by Deception for a couple reasons that also intertwine with the backstory of this series. When Marie Force first announced that she was releasing a historical romance series, I was a bit apprehensive about it due to my limited exposure to the specific category, which is the The Lustful Lord Series by Sorcha Mowbray. Therefore, I waited for a good bit after the release of the firs book to read it, and by the time I read it, many months had passed. However, now having read both books in this historical romance series, I can tell you that I really fell in love with the setting, the characters, and the storylines, but for this review I am going to focus on Deceived by Desire. Lets get into it...
As mentioned before, Deceived by Desire is book two in the Gilded Series. As soon as I read the first book, I could not wait for its sequel and boy, it did not disappoint. It truly reminded me of a Bollywood movie in novel form taking place in the early 20th century. If you know anything about romantic Hollywood movies (especially from the 90s- Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge), its all about the protagonist (girl) falling in love with a boy that the girls` parents do not approve of. Instead, in this novel, the roles are reversed, the setting is changed to a different period, and the culture is different, although similar in some degree. While reading this novel, I felt like there was a movie going on in my head. In a weird way, this book reminded me of my childhood of my love of romantic Bollywood movies as well as reading historical fiction books (American Diaries?). It was basically a weird mash of the two in the best way with the best twist, being written by one of my favorite authors. Now that I have rambled for a bit, the synopsis is going up next as well as information of where to buy this book, the series and more information about the brilliant author.
Wealthy American industrialist Aubrey Nelson has invited the Duke and Duchess of Westbrook to visit his family’s Newport seaside “cottage” for the summer. With his parents’ departure from New York delayed, Aubrey’s mother sends him ahead to oversee preparations for their guests. But when he arrives, he’s surprised to find the house and staff in disarray . . .
With much to do and little time, Aubrey comes to rely on the housekeeper, a lovely young Irish woman named Maeve Brown. And when he also finds himself confiding in Maeve about more personal matters, he tells himself it’s merely their close proximity that draws him to the compassionate, hard-working beauty. Yet when he suspects Maeve is in danger, Aubrey realizes his feelings for her have grown much deeper than they should have. For what will his mother, who dreams of a society match for her son, have to say when she arrives to discover he’s lost his heart to a girl of the working class?
